SMALL-SCALE NUCLEAR POWER

“a sustainable solution to important challenges for the generations to come.”

The first question to ask is: is nuclear power a sustainable form of energy conversion? The definition mostly used for “sustainablility” is from the report “Our Common Future” – 1987 by Mrs. Bruntland: “Sustainable development is development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

“Energy equals electricity and/or heat and/or fresh water” and these are the building bricks of our peace, welfare and well-being (Dutch Association for Nuclear Power”

Energy conversion

The history of energy conversion shows a few trends. It indicates that Nuclear Power is the next logical and additional step in the development of energy conversion systems, such as the increase in the energy content of the fuels we use. Constantly we are reminded that the coming generations will suffer from the way we deal with our waste. The legitimate procedures of dilution and dispersion lead to changes in the climate. In addition we consume in about 120 years what Mother Earth has made in millions of years. Mining the fossil fuels is getting more and more difficult and complicated.

Nuclear power leaves, relatively, not much waste, however this waste is radioactive and still contains very much energy. For these reasons this waste is neatly packed, controlled and stored for re-use in the future. And all trends show that re-usage is going to be happen. Plutonium is already mixed with new fuel and this mixture is used as fuel in modern nuclear power plants. The coming Generation IV nuclear reactors will be even more suitable to re-use radio-active waste of nuclear reactors of previous generations. So it seems likely that this generation is the first generation which leaves fuel for the coming generations.

Conclusion: Nuclear Power is sustainable energy!

NEREUS

NEREUS is an acronym and expands to a Naturally safe, Efficient, nuclear Reactor, Easy to operate, Ultimately simple and Small. The NEREUS project aims to develop a small scale inherently safe nuclear power source suitable for unmanned power plants and unmanned engine rooms, weight about 2000 tons, thermal power 24 MWth, fuel 3 years – 80% power – 80% time, efficiency - 40%.
