About Romawa
Romawa was founded on the 1st of December, 1992 by Gulian A.K. Crommelin and his wife, M.Th. Crommelin-de Jonge. The name does not stand for anything rotating and has nothing to do with machinery or water. It denotes the first two letters of the names of their three children; Robert, Mariëtte and Walter.
In december 1993 Gulian Crommelin retired as Captain (E) of the Royal Netherlands Navy. He started his career in 1963 when he graduated from the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine (Royal Navy Academy) in Den Helder as engineer. He first served on board HM Karel Doorman, the last Dutch aircraft carrier, in the boiler room (this was a steam ship).
After having served on several ships during a period of ten years, he moved to Bath, England, to start up the pool system of the gas turbines owned by the Dutch, British and Belgian Royal Navies and the French Navy. This is where his extensive knowledge of the pool-system originates.
When after three years he returned to serve on board ships, this time those ships had gas turbines in their engine rooms. Until his retirement he alternatively served on board or worked at the Ministry of Defense. He left the active service in 1993 and was awarded the 'Order of Oranje Nassau with swords'.
Since then he has mainly been busy with the development of the idea of the Nereus installation. He has also participated in the pre-feasibility study of the INCOGEN-installation, together with ECN, Nucon, KEMA and IRI.
To create a better awareness of the possibilities of nuclear energy as a part of the total energy spectrum, he spends lots of time giving lectures at universities and colleges. He participated in the ESKOM-conference in South Africa and is a returning visitor of the ASME conferences.
